Greg Marshall got his wish on Wednesday, taking on the head coaching duties of the Saskatchewan Roughriders, a task that will take him into the heart of some of the most passionate of football followers and subject to the scrutiny of hundreds of thousands of arm chair General Managers with every decision.
Ken Miller, who held the coaching reins the last few years, conducted the job search which would appear to have had a pretty short, short list, Marshall being one of the most sought after and most interviewed of assistants over his 16 years as an assistant.
Frequently touted as one of the last men standing on many an interview session, Marshall would most times than not find someone else donning the headset, an oversight that the Riders took care of on Wednesday.
The long time CFL player and coach returns to the Riders where he once handled the duties of a defensive assistant back from 94 to 99, through his years as a coach, his teams defensive teams have always been among the toughest and most productive of CFL teams.
A coaching philosophy that should make the Riders a most formidable opponent in the 2011 season and perhaps return them to the Grey Cup and a chance to once again bring the CFL's most treasured trophy back to Saskatchewan.
On a cold January morning on the prairies, the dreams of summer aren't that far off and for the Rider Nation, one more step towards the goal seems in place.
