CFL Gameday: Saskatchewan at Calgary (October 1)

Two teams that need to get things back on track meet up Saturday afternoon at Calgary's McMahon Stadium as the Stampeders host the Riders, a game which offers the Stamps the opportunity to hold onto their increasingly tenuous hold on first place in the CFL West.

With the B. C. Lions charging hard now with six consecutive wins, the Stamps are spending a fair amount of time looking over their shoulders, something which is providing for some serious inconsistency for the product on the field.

Head coach John Hufnagel, has become so concerned over his squad's less than focused outlook on the game these days, that he wondered aloud last week about his squads commitment and desire, never a good thing when you're heading into the final third of a season.

Saskatchewan was probably feeling pretty good about themselves up until last weekend, in the weeks leading up to their destruction at the hands of the Lions, the Riders had fashioned themselves a nice little winning streak, seemingly back in their happy spot under the tutelage of Ken Miller.

That all came to an end in a most disturbing manner last week, as the Lions rolled into Mosaic Stadium and basically ran the Riders out of their own ballpark, or at least their fans, as a good portion of the usual sell out crowd were off to other ventures by the time the second half got underway.

In a season where the losses piled up early for Saskatchewan, adding to the early season total at this point of the season isn't going to help the cause of scrambling for a playoff opportunity. Another loss or two and the Rider Nation will be facing a November without much football to watch.

There's less danger of the Stamps falling out of the playoffs at this point, Saturday offers the Stamps the chance to get back onto a winning track, but considering their recent efforts there's no guarantee that they'll grab it.
