Gibson's Players of the Month (September 2012)

From the Labour Day Classics through til' the end of the month, some very clear themes came to the forefront of the CFL.

Travis Lulay is clear and away the leader of an increasingly confident BC Lion attack, Lulay's numbers in September carrying on his fine work of August, a pace that has kept the Lions atop the league standings for much of the 2012 season.

In Edmonton, the defence is defined by the work ethic of J. C. Sherrit, the Eskimos defensive end proving to be cut from the same cloth of the legends that travelled Commonwealth before him. Full effort game in and game out, provides a tale of woe for opposing QB's. Even as the Eskimos struggled on offence, Sherritt led his defensive corps into battle game in and game out, giving the Eskimos opportunities to win, unfortunately for Kavis Reed, Sherritt can't run the offence as well, if he could, we imagine the Esks would be Grey Cup bound.

The Ti Cats are known for their Jekyll and Hyde moments this year, but that can't be said for their kicker. Luca Congi, put together as perfect a September as a kicker could hope for, connecting on all his field goal attempts, perfect on converts in those few instances where the Ti Cats could put a touchdown on the board. A performance that more than was enough to give him the Gibson's nod.

And at the risk of becoming repetitive, it was another banner month for Jon Cornish, the Stampeder running back blew past the 1,000 yard mark for rushing in September, added key touchdowns to the Stampeder attack and collected yet more Gibson Awards for his efforts. Just another month in the season of Jon Cornish.

Offensive Player of the Month

Travis LulayBritish Columbia Lions, QB

The Travis Lulay show gained a few more viewers through September as the Lions Quarterback not only improved on his personal stats, but provided the spark to keep the Lions hold on the top of the CFL West as secure as it's been all season.

Defensive Player of the Month

JC SherrittEdmonton Eskimos, DE

We have tried to fine more ways of saying much of the same, but really, our thoughts from August hold up into September. The most intimidating member of the Eskimos defensive corps has been rattling off defensive player awards of the week through the summer, with three weekly awards and now his second player of the month award, Sherritt is clearly the most dominant defensive player in the league at the moment. Found frequently in the background of many an opposing offence, his contribution to the Eskimos defensive game has once again helped the Esks become one of the most feared of defences in the league.

Special Teams Player of the Month

Luca Congi, Hamilton Tiger Cats, K

When the Tiger Cats aren't controlling the Gibson's Awards for Special Teams on the kick return, it's their own kicker who is impressing the selection panel. Luca Congi, broke Chris Williams hold on the  bragging rights through the summer.  Congi proved to be the most consistent thing on a very inconsistent Tiger Cat team, connecting on all of his fifteen field goal attempts while making all 14 of the conversions he was called to work on. Considering some of the woes of the Ti Cat offence these days, Congi's 59 points of September may be one of the few bright lights for the Cats coaching squad this season.

Top Canadian Player of the Month

Jon CornishCalgary Stampeders, RB

The march of Jon Cornish towards Awards night  during Grey Cup week continues on, the CFL's most exciting rusher added some more stats to his resume and built up his legend through the month of September. Cornish put together 556 yards on 76 carries in September, adding five TD's to the Stamps totals, becoming the first player to reach the 1,000 yard mark for rushing in the 2012 season. More than enough achievement to gain him yet another award for 2012.
